The Dutch in Vienna

Perhaps this fact is not as well known, but the Netherlands and its Dutch population have a long history in Vienna and their influences are still recognizable. Firstly, magnificent paintings by Rembrandt, Vermeer and other painters of the 17th century are found in the Museum of Fine Arts. And in the Academy of Fine Arts you can marvel at the beautiful and extraordinary triptych by Hieronymus Bosch entitled “The Last Judgment”.

But have you ever heard of Dr Gerard van Swieten, who was Maria Theresa’s physician and is considered one of the founding fathers of the Viennese health system? Did you know that Dutch landscape architects created many of the famous parks, such as the park at Schönbrunn Palace? These highlights and much more form the basis of this tour. It is mainly completed on foot, but we also make use of the excellent Viennese public transport network where needed.

The structure of this tour is variable. A visit to the Museum of Fine Arts to admire the works of the famous Dutch (and Flemish) painters can be included as well, for example. Likewise, the duration of the tour can easily be adapted to your wishes.

Duration: approx. 1.5-2.5 hours
